Murray River Police District officers have seized four weapons during a high-visibility operation conducted in Albury CBD last Friday, May 30, 2025.

The proactive police presence, dubbed Operation Ares, saw officers utilising handheld electronic metal-detecting 'wands' to identify and confiscate knives and other weapons in public spaces across Albury.

During the 12-hour operation, which ran from 10am to 10pm, police achieved significant results. Notable incidents included an encounter on Dean Street near Macauley Street around 2:15pm. A 49-year-old man was stopped for a scan, and police allegedly discovered a knife concealed within a sheath inside his backpack. He has since been issued a court attendance notice for possessing a knife in a public place and is scheduled to appear at Albury Local Court on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

Earlier in the day, at approximately 10:55am, officers patrolling a shopping plaza on Kiewa Street in Albury attempted to scan a 45-year-old man. When he reportedly became aggressive, he was issued a move-on order. His refusal to comply led to his arrest and removal from the premises. He faces charges of harassing a police officer in the execution of duty without actual bodily harm and is also set to appear at Albury Local Court on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

The success of Operation Ares highlights the ongoing efforts by local police to enhance community safety and reduce weapon-related incidents within Albury.
