🎸 AC/DC Memorial Statue Discussions Emerge, Burwood Origins Highlighted

Plans for a public memorial statue honouring legendary rock band AC/DC, whose journey famously began in Burwood, are gaining momentum within the New South Wales Parliament.

During a recent session, The Hon. Jeremy Buckingham raised a question to the Minister for the Arts, The Hon. John Graham, regarding the government's commitment to commemorating the band's significant contributions to music and culture. Minister Graham acknowledged AC/DC's roots in Burwood before they went on to achieve global fame, stating, "As the member pointed out, the band's journey started in Burwood and carried on in venues across Sydney and the country and around the world."

The Minister confirmed that Sound NSW is actively exploring the most suitable ways to celebrate these iconic New South Wales artists. He emphasised the importance of consulting with the band members and their families to ensure any memorial aligns with their wishes and those of the wider community and fans. While a specific design for a statue, described as "bold," was mentioned, Minister Graham clarified that the government is not yet endorsing any particular concept, but rather swinging its support behind the broader campaign to recognise AC/DC.

The discussion also broadened to the wider recognition of New South Wales' rich music history, with Minister Graham noting that a recent music history roundtable gathered experts to identify other significant artists, venues, and moments deserving of acknowledgment. AC/DC was a prominent mention, alongside other Australian music legends like INXS and Slim Dusty, highlighting a broader governmental push to properly document and celebrate the state's musical heritage.
