🚧 Glen Martin Road works cause delays in Clarence Town
Essential maintenance and safety improvement works are scheduled for the historic Brig O'Johnston Bridge in Clarence Town. Transport for NSW has announced that the bridge will be temporarily closed to facilitate this important work.
The bridge will be closed between 9am and 3pm on Wednesday, July 9, Thursday, July 10, and Friday, July 11, weather permitting. These dates were rescheduled due to wet weather conditions experienced earlier in July.
During these closures, motorists will need to follow a detour route. The detour will direct traffic via Clarence Town Road, Italia Road, the Pacific Highway, and The Bucketts Way. This alternative route is expected to add up to 50 minutes to usual travel times.
The Brig O'Johnston Bridge, built in 1880, is the oldest surviving timber truss bridge in New South Wales and holds significant heritage value. The current rehabilitation project aims to strengthen the bridge to meet contemporary vehicle load standards while preserving its unique heritage features.
This initiative is part of the NSW Government's commitment to maintaining critical infrastructure and reducing future maintenance costs. Planning for the comprehensive rehabilitation is ongoing, with further community consultation expected once environmental assessments are complete.
Transport for NSW has thanked the community for their understanding and patience as these essential works are carried out.
