🌍Climate Council warns Lismore faces more floods without net zero
Security measures at Lismore Base Hospital are set to be enhanced with the facility now participating in the NSW Government's 12-month trial of body worn cameras for security staff.
This initiative, which aims to significantly improve safety for staff, patients, and visitors alike, sees Lismore Base Hospital join a total of 15 hospitals across New South Wales. The broader trial commenced at Royal North Shore Hospital in December 2024 and includes health facilities in east Sydney, northern Sydney, south western Sydney, Hunter New England, the Illawarra Shoalhaven, and the Mid North Coast.
During incidents involving aggression or violence, particularly where there is a risk of harm to individuals, security personnel at participating hospitals are equipped to activate these body worn cameras. The primary objective is to determine how effective the visible presence of these cameras is in deterring and de-escalating volatile situations.
Minister for Health Ryan Park reiterated the government's commitment to safety, stating, "The safety of our staff and patients is my top priority as the Minister for Health." He emphasised a zero-tolerance approach to aggression, adding, "Any instances of aggression towards staff will not be tolerated, and appropriate action will always be taken against individuals who behave in such a manner."
The trial represents one of several strategies being implemented to ensure a safe environment in NSW public hospitals, building on recommendations from the Anderson Review of Hospital Security. Other measures include the establishment of the Safety and Security Improvement Unit, standardised 'code black' procedures, and enhanced support for patient experience officers. The effectiveness of the body worn cameras will be independently evaluated upon the trial's completion, providing valuable insights for future security strategies in Lismore and beyond.
