Illawong residents planning to explore the Georges River National Park are advised of upcoming access restrictions. From January 12 to March 20, 2026, vehicle trails at Sandy Point within the Georges River National Park will be temporarily closed on weekdays due to essential maintenance works by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).
Georges River National Park is a significant natural asset bordering Illawong, a suburb whose name fittingly means 'between two waters,' referring to the Georges and Woronora Rivers. The park, spanning 514 hectares, is a popular destination for locals and visitors alike, offering a range of recreational activities such as bushwalking, picnics, barbecues, boating, and fishing.
The specific closure affects vehicle trails at Sandy Point. While Sandy Point is known for its natural beauty and is home to the popular Sandy Point Reserve playground, which adjoins the National Park and features accessible play equipment and walking trails managed by Sutherland Shire Council, the current alert specifically targets the National Park's vehicle access for maintenance.
The NPWS has issued a stern reminder for all park users to adhere to closure signage and follow instructions from staff and contractors. Non-compliance can lead to significant penalties under the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Regulation 2019, with fines potentially reaching 30 penalty units (currently $3,300) for failing to comply with directions. Furthermore, entering a closed area could potentially void personal insurance policies, escalating the risks involved.
For more information regarding the closure or park updates, residents can contact the Royal National Park area office directly on 02 9542 0632 or visit the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service website.
