Police Clamp Down on Public Transport Crime in Sydney
Sydney’s public transport network has seen a significant boost in safety following the latest phase of a major police operation, with 176 arrests made and 326 charges laid. Operation Waratah 4, which concluded on June 14, 2025, also resulted in the seizure of 10 knives, demonstrating a strong commitment from NSW Police to combat crime on trains, buses, and ferries.
The Police Transport Command’s proactive campaign involved 150 officers deployed across transport hubs in Sydney between June 11 and June 14. This recent push brings the total arrests under Operation Waratah to 833 since its inception in 2024, with a cumulative 1474 charges laid and 90 knives seized over the past year.
Detective Superintendent Andrew Evans, Commander of Police Transport North West, commended the efforts of his team. "Everyone using our public transport system deserves to feel safe and the fact more than 170 people have been arrested demonstrates the NSW Police’s commitment to commuter safety," Supt Evans stated. He emphasised the effectiveness of such operations in removing dangerous weapons and bringing offenders to justice.
While Operation Waratah 4 has concluded, authorities assure Sydneysiders that high-visibility patrols and further targeted operations will continue across the public transport network to ensure ongoing safety for commuters. Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activity on the public transport network to Crime Stoppers.
