Artarmon Public School is celebrating a significant achievement, earning a place on the prestigious 2025 'Schools Making a Difference' list. This recognition highlights the school's exceptional performance, exceeding expectations when compared to similar educational institutions across the state in the latest National Assessment Program β Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) results.
The positive news for Artarmon comes amidst a broader success story for NSW public schools, which have collectively scored significantly above the national average in NAPLAN for the second consecutive year. NSW public schools account for over a third of the 183 schools nationally that achieved above the national average, demonstrating strong results across all tested areas and year groups.
NAPLAN is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9, designed to evaluate essential literacy and numeracy skills crucial for academic progression and life beyond school. It provides a consistent measure of student achievement across Australia.
Department of Education Secretary, Murat Dizdar, extended his congratulations to NSW public sector teachers and school leaders. Mr Dizdar attributed the strong performance to a focused approach on explicit teaching, underpinned by the Centre for Education Statistics and Evaluation's (CESE) 'What Works Best' research. CESE's 'What Works Best' is a comprehensive suite of resources guiding educators on effective, evidence-based teaching practices, covering areas such as high expectations, explicit teaching, and effective feedback.
The Department remains committed to building on these strong results, ensuring every student in Artarmon and beyond receives the necessary support to reach their full potential. This includes a continued emphasis on evidence-based professional learning for teachers and targeted initiatives like the permanent small group tuition program, which aims to enhance literacy and numeracy standards.
Beyond academic achievement, the latest data from the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA), available on the My School website, also reveals encouraging trends in attendance across NSW schools. The proportion of students attending more than 90 per cent of the time increased by four percentage points, with daily student attendance lifting slightly to nearly 88 per cent. Departmental data shows a significant decrease in student absences, by almost one million days, or nearly 10 per cent, from 2024 to 2025.
Artarmon Public School has a history of strong NAPLAN performance, consistently featuring prominently in results, with its 2024 Annual Report also highlighting improvements in numeracy outcomes and student wellbeing data, aligning with the 'What Works Best' framework.
