Visitors to the stunning Blue Mountains National Park are advised to plan their trips carefully, as numerous roads, fire trails, and walking tracks remain closed due to extensive infrastructure repairs and severe damage from prolonged wet weather events. The region has been significantly impacted by repeated flooding and storms between 2019 and 2022, with Blue Mountains City Council declaring natural disaster areas multiple times, leading to widespread landslips and infrastructure damage.
Katoomba and Leura Areas
- Honeymoon Bridge at Echo Point is closed due to rockfall hazards.
- Federal Pass (between Furber Steps and Leura Forest, including Dardanelles Pass) is closed Tuesday to Friday from October to December for track works, reopening on weekends.
- The bottom section of Leura Cascades track is closed until the end of 2025 for upgrades. This means no access to the Prince Henry Cliff walk between the top of Leura Cascades and the Amphitheatre junction; a short detour via Cliff Drive is available. The Leura Cascades parking area and toilets are also closed.
- Fern Bower track, connecting Prince Henry Cliff walk and Amphitheatre track, is shut due to landslides.
- Glenraphael Drive (Narrow Neck fire trail) is closed to vehicles near Cliff Drive due to road subsidence, though walkers and cyclists are still permitted.
- Parts of Lindeman Pass and Roberts Pass are closed because of major landslides and rockfall hazards.
- The iconic Six Foot track is affected by closures, notably at Jenolan Caves and between Katoomba (Explorer's Tree) and Alum Creek for aerial pest control works from November 25 to 27, 2025. The Jenolan Caves precinct itself has been closed since April 2024 due to extreme rainfall, flooding, and landslips, with road repairs expected to keep it inaccessible until 2026, significantly impacting track access.
Wentworth Falls and Woodford Areas
- A section of National Pass (west of Wentworth Falls middle crossing) is closed due to a major landslide.
- Wentworth Pass and Slack Stairs are closed for elevated boardwalk repairs, cutting off access to Roberts Pass, Hippocrene, or Vera Falls routes.
- Valley of the Waters is closed below Silvia Falls due to rockfall hazards, also affecting access to Roberts Pass, Hippocrene, or Vera Falls.
Blackheath, Mount Victoria, Megalong Valley, and Bells Line of Road
- Pulpit Rock Reserve, its lookouts, and part of the walking track are closed. While specific current reasons for this closure are not detailed in the alert, the area has previously experienced closures due to bushfire damage. The walking track from Popes Glen remains open up to the NPWS boundary.
- Govetts descent and sections of Rodriguez Pass are closed due to rockfalls and landslides; valley access from Blackheath is via Horse Track.
- Dunphys Campground and Green Gully Road are closed for maintenance and upgrades from October 13 to December 22, 2025, with no pedestrian or vehicle access during this period. Hikers can still access the Wild Dog Mountains and Cox's River corridor from the Narrowneck Plateau.
- The Grand Canyon Walking track will be partially closed from the junction of Horse track and Old Point Pilcher trail from Wednesday, October 29 to Friday, October 31. Walkers can access part of the track from Neates Glen carpark but must return the same way, as there will be no access via Evans Lookout.
Other Significant Closures and Safety Alerts
- Euroka walking track is closed for repairs from February 1 to December 31, 2025.
- Waratah Native Gardens picnic area and its Gorge walking track are closed until further notice.
- Remote routes within the Kanangra Wilderness Area, including the Kanangra to Katoomba (K2K) trail, have been significantly impacted by fire regrowth and flood damage, making tracks difficult to navigate with limited water sources. Walkers in these areas need appropriate experience, navigation skills, and equipment, including a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), due to limited mobile reception.
Penalties apply for non-compliance with closure directives. For more information, contact the Blue Mountains Heritage Centre on (02) 4787 8877.
