🚧 Temporary Closures & Works Planned for Blue Mountains NP
Visitors planning to explore the iconic Blue Mountains National Park are advised to check conditions before heading out, as numerous roads, fire trails, and walking tracks are currently closed. The closures are a result of extensive infrastructure repairs, ongoing upgrades, and significant damage caused by recent wet weather, leading to subsidence, rockfalls, landslides, and fallen trees.
Several popular walking tracks in Katoomba and Leura were closed from Tuesday, 9th September, due to heavy rains. These include the Grand Canyon, Giant Stairs, Furber, Federal Pass, Valley of the Water, and all tracks leading into the Grose Valley. Honeymoon Bridge remains shut due to rockfall hazards. The bottom section of Leura Cascades track is closed until late 2025 for upgrade works, affecting access to parts of the Prince Henry Cliff walk. Leura Cascades parking and toilets are also unavailable. Fern Bower track is closed between Prince Henry Cliff walk and Amphitheatre track due to landslides, while Glenraphael Drive (Narrow Neck fire trail) is closed to vehicles near Cliff Drive, though walkers and cyclists are still permitted. Lindeman Pass and Roberts Pass are also impacted by landslides and rockfall hazards. The Six Foot track is experiencing closures near Jenolan Caves.
In the Wentworth Falls and Woodford areas, parts of National Pass are closed west of the middle crossing due to a major landslide. Wentworth Pass and Slack Stairs are shut for elevated boardwalk repairs, affecting access to Roberts Pass, Hippocrene, and Vera Falls. The Valley of the Waters below Silvia Falls is also closed due to rockfall risks, similarly restricting access to Roberts Pass, Hippocrene, and Vera Falls.
Pulpit Rock Reserve, its lookouts, and part of its walking track are closed. Govetts descent and Rodriguez Pass are inaccessible due to rockfalls and landslides.
Two separate 1080 baiting programs are being conducted by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to control wild dogs and foxes: an aerial program from 25th August to 7th September 2025 across Blue Mountains National Park, and an ongoing ground baiting program from 2nd May 2025 to 1st May 2026 in the southern section of Blue Mountains National Park and other surrounding parks. Visitors are reminded that domestic pets are not permitted in national parks, and 1080 poison is lethal to cats and dogs. Signs will be placed at baiting locations.
Penalties apply for non-compliance with closure directives. For the most current information, visitors are urged to contact the local NPWS offices at Blackheath (02 4787 8877), Oberon (02 6336 6200), or Glenbrook (02 4720 6200), or the Blue Mountains Heritage Centre.
