A 19-year-old woman has been charged by NSW Police following an investigation into a tragic fatal crash in Auburn last year. The incident, which occurred on Park Road, resulted in the death of an 84-year-old pedestrian.

Emergency services were called to Park Road, Auburn, around 6pm on Wednesday, 8 October 2025, after reports of a collision. Officers from Auburn Police Area Command attended the scene, where a Toyota SUV had reportedly collided with a pedestrian. The elderly woman sustained serious injuries and was transported to hospital in a critical condition, where she later sadly passed away.

The driver of the SUV, a 19-year-old woman, was uninjured but underwent mandatory testing at Auburn Hospital. Following extensive inquiries, police issued the woman with a Court Attendance Notice yesterday, Tuesday, 20 January 2026. She has been charged with negligent driving (occasioning death).

She is scheduled to appear before Burwood Local Court on Thursday, 5 March 2026.

Negligent driving occasioning death is a serious offence in New South Wales. For a first offence, penalties can include a maximum fine of $3,300 and/or up to 18 months imprisonment, along with a mandatory licence disqualification period of at least 12 months. This charge highlights the critical responsibility drivers have to maintain due care on our roads.

This incident also comes amidst ongoing efforts by the NSW Government to improve road safety across the state. Initiatives like the 'Towards Zero' goal and the 2026 Road Safety Action Plan aim to reduce road trauma, with a specific focus on protecting vulnerable road users such as pedestrians. Programs are designed to deliver safer roads and encourage safer choices to minimise fatalities and serious injuries on NSW roads.
