Transport IncidentsIncident 1 min read

Merrylands motorists experienced disruptions recently following a car breakdown on the M4 Motorway, affecting westbound traffic just past Burnett Street.

The incident led to a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h in the affected area, with authorities urging drivers to exercise caution. Emergency services and Transport for NSW crews were quickly on the scene to manage the situation and ensure safety on the busy thoroughfare.

The M4 Motorway is a critical artery for Sydney's west, carrying a substantial volume of traffic daily, with some sections seeing around 160,000 vehicles on an average weekday. Incidents like breakdowns can have a ripple effect, causing significant congestion for commuters, including those from Merrylands.

This section of the M4 benefits from 'Smart Motorway' technology, which includes over 100 extra CCTV cameras and more than 1300 in-road traffic sensors located every 500 metres to monitor real-time conditions and allow for quick responses to incidents. This advanced system is credited with a 30% reduction in total crashes and a 20% improvement in travel times in the region since its introduction.

Drivers are always advised to check real-time updates from Live Traffic NSW before embarking on their journey to stay informed about current road conditions and avoid unexpected delays.
