Commuters utilising Kogarah Station are currently facing disruptions as Lift 4, which provides essential access between the concourse and Platforms 2 and 3, is temporarily out of service. Transport for NSW has issued an alert, confirming the closure is due to scheduled maintenance.
This temporary unavailability particularly impacts passengers who rely on accessible transport, including those with mobility challenges, parents with prams, or individuals travelling with heavy luggage. Kogarah Station is a vital transport hub within our suburb, recognised for its overall accessibility, featuring multiple lifts to assist travellers.
The current maintenance on Lift 4 is part of ongoing efforts to ensure the reliability and safety of station infrastructure. It's worth noting that major replacement works were undertaken on Lift 2 and Lift 4 at Kogarah Station between March and June 2022, specifically aimed at improving service reliability and reducing the need for future maintenance. This demonstrates a proactive approach to maintaining these critical assets.
All lifts, escalators, and moving walkways within public transport networks are considered 'plant items' and must be registered annually with SafeWork NSW, with meticulous records kept of all inspections and maintenance. This ensures they meet stringent safety and operational standards. Transport for NSW also adheres to specific design standards for vertical transport systems, covering all aspects from planning to ongoing maintenance to uphold quality and consistency across the network.
Passengers requiring assistance while Lift 4 is unavailable are encouraged to speak directly with station staff or contact Transport for NSW on 02 9563 7273. Commuters should allow for extra travel time if alternative routes, such as stairs, are not feasible for their journey.
