⚠️ Kogarah Station Lift Out of Service, Affecting Commuters

Transport AlertsMaintenance 2 min read

Commuters at Kogarah Station are facing disruptions as Lift 5, which provides essential access between the concourse and Platform 1, is temporarily out of service. Transport for NSW has issued an alert, indicating the closure is due to ongoing maintenance.

This temporary unavailability particularly affects passengers requiring accessible transport, including those with mobility issues, parents with prams, or individuals with heavy luggage. Kogarah Station is generally recognised as an independently accessible and wheelchair-friendly hub within the Sydney Trains network, having received upgrades including lifts in the 1990s. Platform 1 primarily serves T4 line services bound for Bondi Junction.

While this current disruption is frustrating, it highlights the continuous efforts in maintaining station infrastructure. Sydney Trains has previously undertaken major lift replacement works at Kogarah Station, including Lifts 2 and 4 from March to June 2022. An earlier notice from Transport for NSW also detailed a major upgrade for Lift No. 5 itself between October and December, aimed at improving service reliability and customer facilities.

The broader context of such maintenance is part of the NSW Government's significant investment in public transport accessibility. The 'Safe Accessible Transport' program, which allocated $800.7 million in 2023-24, aims to upgrade stations and wharves, including the installation of more lifts, to ensure safe, inclusive, and easy access for all passengers. As of August 2025, 72.73% of Sydney Trains stations are independently accessible, although the 2022 compliance targets for infrastructure accessibility are still being met.

Passengers needing assistance while Lift 5 is unavailable are encouraged to speak with station staff or phone 02 9563 7273. Transport for NSW works to minimise disruption during essential maintenance, but commuters should allow extra travel time if an alternative route via stairs is not feasible.
