๐Ÿš† Operational Issue Disrupts Kogarah Train Stops, Delays

Transport AlertsUnknown Cause 2 min read

Train passengers in Kogarah are currently experiencing significant disruptions, with services unable to stop at Kogarah, Rockdale, and Penshurst stations. Transport for NSW has issued an alert confirming that the altered services are due to an unspecified "operational issue," leading to significant delays across the line.

The cause of this latest disruption remains unknown at this time, leaving many commuters in our community frustrated. Operational issues can encompass a wide range of problems, from train faults to signal failures or track incidents. The T4 Illawarra Line, which services Kogarah, frequently encounters various disruptions. Common causes for delays on Sydney Trains services, including the T4 line, can range from passenger illness, severe weather conditions, and train mechanical problems, to signal, track, and overhead wiring issues, as well as vandalism and even overcrowding.

Transport for NSW aims for a punctuality target of 92% for peak services, meaning trains should arrive within five minutes of their scheduled time. However, recent data indicates that Sydney Trains has struggled to meet these targets consistently, with reports suggesting punctuality has been missed every month over the past year. Specifically for the T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra line, approximately 15.5% of services have run late in recent periods. In 2025 alone, up to May 16, the T4 line recorded 1,017 train service outages, highlighting ongoing challenges.

Passengers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, check real-time updates via the Transport for NSW website (transportnsw.info/alerts) or relevant transport apps, and allow for considerable extra travel time. Skipping scheduled stops, as is occurring today, is a measure often taken by Sydney Trains to minimise the broader impact of delays on subsequent services and the majority of passengers.

The impact of such unexpected delays can be substantial for the Kogarah community, affecting daily commutes for work, school, and other essential activities. Residents will be hoping for a swift resolution to the operational issue and a return to regular service.
