An 85-year-old man has tragically died after being struck by a car in a unit block carpark on Helen Street, Lane Cove, yesterday, Sunday 5 October 2025.
Emergency services were called to the residential street, known for its mix of unit blocks and family homes, at approximately 11:40 am following reports of the incident. Paramedics from NSW Ambulance treated the elderly man at the scene, but he sadly passed away.
The driver of the vehicle, an 87-year-old woman, was uninjured but was transported to hospital for mandatory testing. Under NSW law, drivers involved in fatal crashes are subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing, a measure in place since 2006 to support police investigations into serious road incidents.
Officers from the North Shore Police Area Command have established a crime scene and commenced a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. The NSW Police Force's Crash Investigation Unit (CIU) often leads such inquiries, aiming to determine the cause of serious injury or fatal collisions, noting that most are preventable rather than mere 'accidents'.
As is standard procedure for all sudden and unexpected deaths, especially those resulting from motor vehicle incidents, a report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner. The Coroner's role is to officially investigate the circumstances and medical cause of death, often assisted by forensic pathologists and police investigations.
Police are urging anyone who may have information regarding this incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. All information can be provided confidentially, and the public is reminded not to report details via NSW Police social media pages.
