🚧 Major Road Closures Hit New Lambton Heights for Bypass Work

New Lambton Heights motorists are advised to plan for significant disruptions this weekend, as essential roadwork for the Rankin Park to Jesmond section of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass will lead to major closures on McCaffrey Drive.

From 7pm on Friday, July 4, until 5am on Monday, July 7, McCaffrey Drive will be completely closed to traffic in both directions between Marshall Street and Lookout Road. During this period, Lookout Road will also be reduced to a single lane in each direction to facilitate the ongoing work.

These planned closures are expected to cause considerable delays, with detours of up to five kilometres adding potentially 15 minutes to travel times. Traffic controllers will be stationed on-site to guide motorists through the altered conditions and direct them along alternative routes.

For those travelling southbound on Lookout Road, a right turn onto McCaffrey Drive will not be permitted. Instead, drivers should turn right onto Grandview Road, then right onto Elbrook Drive, returning to McCaffrey Drive. Northbound McCaffrey Drive traffic should turn right onto Elbrook Drive, then left onto Grandview Road to return to Lookout Road. For right turns, motorists should take Marshall Street, then left onto Cardiff Road, returning to Lookout Road.

Local authorities urge all drivers, especially those in New Lambton Heights and surrounding areas, to allow for extra travel time, check local signage carefully, and consider using alternative routes if possible. Heavy vehicle operators with a ground contact or overall width greater than 3m are particularly advised to contact the project team at least one day in advance on 1800 818 433 to avoid significant delays.
