Swimmers were temporarily cleared from the water at Dee Why Beach and Long Reef Beach on Tuesday morning, 7 April 2026, following multiple shark sightings. The closures were put in place after Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW) observed a shark off Dee Why Beach at approximately 8:38 am, with a subsequent sighting of a bull shark near both Dee Why and Long Reef Beaches at 9:11 am.
SLSNSW drone operators successfully evacuated the water as a precautionary measure. Fortunately, the alert was short-lived, and the beaches were reopened by 9:41 am after the marine threat was deemed to have passed. Residents and beachgoers are reminded to always be #SharkSmart.
SharkSmart NSW provides regular updates on shark activity across the state, including sightings, tagged shark detections, and drumline activity, to help keep the public informed and safe. Recent data from the NSW Department of Primary Industries indicates that while shark encounters are rare, staying informed about local conditions is crucial for coastal safety.
