π Multi-Vehicle Crash on Carlingford Road Impacts Epping Traffic
The Epping Bridge Project, a significant infrastructure upgrade backed by a joint $220 million investment from the Australian and NSW governments, has officially received formal approval to proceed. This vital initiative aims to replace Epping's existing five-lane bridge with a new, wider seven-lane structure, designed to substantially ease congestion, reduce travel times, and enhance road safety for the thousands of vehicles that utilise it daily.
Following extensive community consultation conducted between September and October 2024, which generated nearly 1,000 submissions, Transport for NSW has thoroughly reviewed and addressed public feedback, including detailed traffic modelling. With formal approval now secured, the project is moving forward to engage a contractor for detailed design and delivery.
Early works are slated to commence in May 2025 and continue through to mid-2026, setting the stage for main construction to begin in 2026. These preparatory phases will encompass essential activities such as geotechnical investigations, utility relocations, and rail service adjustments within the road and rail corridors between Brigg Road and Carlingford Road in Epping. While some early works have already been completed, residents should anticipate temporary traffic and parking changes, particularly on High Street and Langston Place, as well as minor disruptions for pedestrians and cyclists around key intersections.
Transport for NSW has advised that work will generally occur during day shifts (Monday to Friday, 7am-6pm; Saturday, 8am-1pm) and night shifts (Monday to Friday, 6pm-7am, for up to two nights per week). Additional out-of-hours work will also take place during planned Sydney Trains weekend trackwork. Traffic controllers will be present on-site to assist motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists through affected zones, ensuring safety and minimising inconvenience.
The new Epping Bridge is poised to unlock crucial road capacity, incorporate improved pedestrian and cyclist pathways, and upgrade public transport infrastructure. This development is expected to significantly contribute to the ongoing growth and revitalisation of the Epping town centre. The community will continue to be informed through regular project updates as construction progresses.
