Wollongong Police and the grieving family of Brandon Yates are urging the community to come forward with any information regarding a fatal stabbing that occurred in the city earlier this year. The 28-year-old was tragically stabbed at a Crown Street unit about 3:20 am on Sunday, 17 August 2025.
Emergency services responded to the scene, where Mr. Yates was treated for critical stab wounds to his chest. He was initially taken to Wollongong Hospital before being transferred to St George Hospital for further treatment. Tragically, police were notified of his passing on Saturday, 23 August, after he died in hospital.
The Wollongong Police District established Strike Force Alcalde to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident. Family members have spoken of their profound grief, with his sister Shantelle Yates describing Brandon as a kind and helpful person who was taken advantage of due to his generous nature. His Nana, Rossilynne Yates, is pleading for anyone with information to provide closure to the devastated family.
Police have released CCTV footage of a person they believe can assist with their inquiries. The individual was seen wearing dark clothing and riding a bicycle north along Hector Street in Wollongong around the time of the stabbing. Investigators are particularly interested in anyone who may have dashcam footage from the area. This incident has shaken the Wollongong community, highlighting the need for vigilance and community cooperation in solving such crimes.
