Cattle producers in Wauchope and the surrounding region are encouraged to attend an essential Animal Health and Welfare workshop hosted by Local Land Services (LLS) on Wednesday, 25th September 2025.
The informative session, held at 24 King Street, Wauchope, will bring together district veterinarians, sustainable agriculture advisors, and biosecurity officers to equip local landholders with practical knowledge to enhance livestock health and management. Local Land Services, a NSW Government agency, plays a crucial role in supporting farmers and land managers across the state, focusing on improving agricultural productivity, controlling pests, fulfilling biosecurity obligations, and managing natural resources.
Key Topics for Producers
- Best practice cattle husbandry
- Pain relief options for livestock
- Managing buffalo fly without Diazinon
- Calibrating drench and vaccine applicators
- Common National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) enquiries
A significant focus of the workshop will be on buffalo fly management, particularly in light of recent changes to chemical availability. Diazinon, a long-standing insecticide, has been largely phased out in Australia by September 2025 due to concerns regarding handler safety, potential human exposure, trade compliance, and its toxicity to other animals. Producers are now encouraged to adopt rotational programs using alternatives such as synthetic pyrethroids, macrocyclic lactones, and the newer isoxazoline chemical family to effectively control buffalo flies and prevent resistance.
Attendees will also gain valuable insights into the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS). The NLIS is Australia's comprehensive system for identifying and tracing cattle, sheep, and goats, vital for maintaining biosecurity, ensuring food safety, and securing market access for Australian produce. It uses electronic ear tags and a central database to record animal movements throughout their lives.
This indoor workshop is specifically designed for landholders seeking current, practical advice. Morning tea and a light lunch will be provided. Similar workshops are also being conducted in Grafton, Coramba, Macksville, Casino, and Murwillumbah.
