More than 200 students from high schools across the Shoalhaven, including Nowra High, Vincentia High, Shoalhaven High, Bomaderry High, Ulladulla High, and new addition St John the Evangelist Catholic High School, have united for the expanded Domestic and Family Violence (DV) Awareness Cup.
Launched in 2023, this annual gala day sees Year 9 to 11 students participate in Under 16s Rugby League (menβs) and League Tag (womenβs) matches. The event is a crucial initiative by the NSW Police Force, particularly the South Coast Police District, in collaboration with Group 7 Rugby League, NSW Rugby League, and the NRL, aimed at fostering a safer future and tackling domestic and family violence head-on.
Prior to the gala day, police officers visited the participating schools, including those in the Nowra area, to conduct educational sessions. These sessions covered essential topics such as respect and provided guidance on how to seek help for victims of domestic and family violence.
Students proudly wore specially designed jerseys, each reflecting their school's heritage and community spirit. Furthermore, local Shoalhaven government and community organisations were on hand at the event, offering vital information and support services to students and their families, reinforcing efforts to break the cycle of violence.
The event also drew high-profile support from the NRL, with footy legend and ambassador Garry Jack, alongside current St George Illawarra NRL and NRLW players, in attendance to inspire the young participants.
South Coast Police District Commander Superintendent Darren Brand emphasised the event's importance. βWe know there is no single solution to stop domestic and family violence, the NSW Police will continue to work with community leaders, government agencies and the private sector to put a stop to domestic violence offenders and protect our communities,β Supt Brand stated. He added that educating the younger generation on seeking help and breaking the cycle of violence is a key part of the solution and why the DV Awareness Cup is so crucial for the South Coast Police District.
The day-long event, running from 8:30 am to 2 pm, saw community members encouraged to cheer on the students and connect with support services. At its conclusion, a merit-based team will be selected for a special training session and a meet and greet with the Dragons NRL and NRLW teams.
