🚢 Pyrmont Ferry Services Disrupted by Vessel Breakdown
The Vaughan Evans Library at 58 Pirrama Road, Pyrmont, is set to host an exhibition titled 'Japanese Maritime Postcards - Movement is Convenient'. From July 14th to December 19th, 2025, visitors can explore postcards from the early twentieth century issued by Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), a major Japanese shipping line that frequently visited Australia.
The exhibition, part of 'The World Remade' series commemorating the end of World War II, delves into the messages conveyed by these postcards and their reception during the White Australia Policy era. It also reflects on the impact of war on Japanese shipping, including the tragic sinking of SS Montevideo Maru in 1942.
The Vaughan Evans Library is open Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm. Enquire at reception on the ground floor for directions in the Wharf 7 building.
