Emergency services are currently on the scene of a two-car crash on the Oxley Highway at Forest Way in Wauchope, causing significant disruptions for motorists. Transport for NSW has advised drivers to reduce their speed and exercise caution when travelling through the area, as traffic in both directions is affected.
The Oxley Highway, a critical state road through Wauchope, has historically been identified as a challenging stretch for drivers. An NRMA report from 2011 highlighted that nearly 50 percent of the entire Oxley Highway posed a 'major risk' to motorists, with a 25 percent increase in casualty-resulting crashes on the Wauchope to Walcha section between 2000 and 2009. This history underscores the importance of heightened awareness on this route.
In response to ongoing safety concerns, Transport for NSW has been undertaking various upgrades and community consultations along the Oxley Highway in the Wauchope region. Recent initiatives include an $11.5 million investment for a six-kilometre stretch of the highway west of Wauchope for pavement widening and rehabilitation. Furthermore, Transport for NSW has conducted community consultations regarding proposed safety improvements, including a potential roundabout, at key intersections like the Oxley Highway and King Creek Road, which recorded six crashes between 2014 and 2020. These ongoing efforts demonstrate the commitment to improving road safety for all users in the Wauchope area.
Motorists travelling on the Oxley Highway at Forest Way should expect delays and follow directions from emergency personnel. Always drive to conditions and remain vigilant on our local roads.
