๐Ÿ”ฅ Werrikimbe Park Alerts: Fire, Roads, 1080 Program Update

AlertsNsw National Parks 2 min read

Wauchope residents and visitors considering a trip to Werrikimbe National Park are advised to review important safety alerts concerning the ongoing Bosanquets fire, revised road access conditions, and an active 1080 baiting program.

Bosanquet Fire Still Active

The Bosanquets fire continues to burn within Werrikimbe National Park. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) urges the public to consult the Rural Fire Service (RFS) for the most current information. For safety, do not enter any areas that are closed or affected by the blaze. If an unattended fire is spotted, contact Triple Zero (000) immediately. Non-compliance with park safety regulations may result in penalties.

Updated Road Access for Werrikimbe NP

Recent severe weather has damaged roads leading to and within Werrikimbe National Park, making some sections passable only by 4WD vehicles. Visitors should exercise caution and plan accordingly. Both Brushy Mountain Campground and Plateau Beech Campground remain open.

  • Cockerawombeeba Road is generally not recommended due to erosion off-park, though it provides access from Hastings Forest Road through to Plateau Beech Campground within the park.
  • Hastings Forest Road and Forbes Road also feature eroded sections outside the park, requiring a 4WD.
  • Drivers should check water depths at waterway crossings, especially the Forbes River crossing on Racecourse Road, before proceeding.
  • Rimau Road remains closed to all traffic.

For detailed information on current road conditions, the Port Macquarie NPWS office can be contacted on (02) 6588 5555.

Ongoing 1080 Baiting Program

The NPWS is conducting an aerial and ground baiting program across Werrikimbe National Park and other areas within the Hastings Macleay region. Scheduled from 8th June 2025 to 8th December 2025, this initiative uses 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison to control wild dogs and foxes. The program aims to protect local wildlife, particularly threatened species, and minimise impacts on neighbouring livestock.

Baiting is also occurring in the Richmond River, Clarence, and Coffs Coast Areas, encompassing various national parks and reserves. Signs will be displayed at baiting locations. Domestic pets are not permitted on NSW National Parks managed lands, as 1080 is highly toxic to cats and dogs. Pets and working dogs must be securely restrained or muzzled in the vicinity of baiting areas and must not enter these zones. In the event of accidental poisoning, immediate veterinary attention is crucial.

For further details on the baiting program, please contact the relevant NPWS area office:

  • Coffs Coast Area: 02 6652 0900
  • Clarence Area: 02 6641 1500
  • Richmond River Area: 02 6632 0000
