Building Commission NSW recently conducted a blitz on construction sites in the Tweed area, revealing a number of compliance issues. The operation, which covered an extensive area from Tweed Heads to Ballina and west to Casino and Kyogle, involved inspections of 33 sites and engagement with 140 tradespersons.
Inspectors focused on verifying licenses, supervision practices, and specialist installations, particularly in electrical and plumbing work. The blitz resulted in the identification of 38 offences, predominantly related to incorrect signage and unlicensed work.
Building Commission NSW issued 21 penalty infringement notices totaling $16,320 and 13 trader education notices. Four cases have been referred for further investigation. Additionally, five sites with significant safety concerns were reported to SafeWork NSW.
Minister for Building Anoulack Chanthivong stated the government's commitment to building quality and ensuring accountability across NSW. Commissioner James Sherrard noted the need for improvement in the Tweed region regarding compliance with signage and licensing rules, and indicated that Building Commission NSW will return to the area to ensure these issues are addressed.
